7th-graders beat Edmonson 38-29

The seventh-grade Cougars used a big third quarter to turn a narrow five-point lead into a 15-point spread, then went on to win their second game of the season, 38-29 at Edmonson County Thursday evening.

Bret Johnston scored 14 points to lead all scorers in the game, and Talon Gary narrowly missed a double-double game as he scored 10 points and gathered in eight rebounds for the Cougars.

Though the Cougars (2-4) trailed only once, at 2-0, the game was close throughout the first half. Grayson County led the Wildcats (1-7) 9-8 heading into the second quarter. The Cougars extended their lead to seven points twice in the second period, the last time coming at 18-11 with 2:19 left in the half, but Edmonson County’s Brandon Cooper beat the buzzer with a put-back basket to make it a five-point game, 18-13, at the break.

Six unanswered points by the Cougars, including a Jameson Van Meter three-pointer, gave the Cougars a 12-point lead, 28-16 with 2:18 left in the third quarter. After Jacob Thein hit a three for the Wildcats to cut the margin to nine, the Cougars closed out the period with six straight to lead by 15 points, 34-19 heading into the final period of play.

Thein led the Wildcats with 12 points. Van Meter had seven points for the Cougars and pulled down three rebounds. Brett Majors had three points, Kyle Travis had two and Dylan Mahurin and Dylan Yaden had one apiece to complete the Cougar scoring.
