Over 50 Girl Scout members were in attendance on November 14 to take part in the community project designed to help a variety of people.
Each child was asked to dress in Hawaiian attire, and come out for a night of dancing and singing in the gymnasium.
Girl Scout Troop Leader Melissa Van Meter, who is the leader of Troop #189, said the event is held the same time every year.
This year the girls were asked to donate books for Kosair Children’s Hospital, and also donate basic goods to give to senior citizens for Christmas.
“The girls had to bring in books for the Kosair Children’s library,” Van Meter mentioned. “They also had a senior citizen project. They were asked to bring in items (basic necessities) for Senior for Santa. Last year we did clothes, but it was very difficult. We get names throughout the community of people who are off the beaten path.”
When it gets closer to Christmas, the Girl Scouts will deliver the presents to the senior citizens, and sing Christmas carols to them.
Van Meter added the other fundraiser that night was going to be for Beading to Beat Autism.
“We were going to do the beads of autism,” Van Meter said, “but the lady was unable to make it, because of a death in family.”
A dental hygienist also attended the luau to show the group how to properly take care of one’s teeth.
For being attentive and participating, the girls were eligible for toothbrush giveaways and other items.
A Hawaiian backdrop, hand-painted by one of the troops, was set up if people wanted their picture taken.
“We are constantly working with the community,” Van Meter added.
The next event for the Girl Scouts is a Cookie Cook-off on December 12. Troops will be working with the Humane Society on making dog treats.
