The Lady Cougar seventh-grade basketball team improved its overall record to 10-7 Monday night with a 28-18 victory over visiting Muhlenberg South.

Eleni Eversole, who has recently earned a spot in the starting lineup, led the Lady Cougars in scoring with eight points and added four rebounds and three steals.

Guard Kaylan Shull had seven points and led the Lady Cougars on the boards with 12 rebounds. Shull also led the team with three assists.

South’s Bethany Smith hit a 15-footer at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter that tied the score at 2-2. That would be the only time the Lady Suns would be within shouting distance of the lead.

The Lady Cougars closed out the period with eight unanswered points to take a 10-2 lead into the second quarter. Eversole had six of her eight points in the period.

South’s Desiree Shultz canned a three-pointer with 1:15 left in the half that cut the lead to seven points, 14-7, but Shull immediately responded with a three of her own and the Lady Cougars led by 10 at the half, 17-7.

Grayson County built a 15-point lead, 28-13 heading into the fourth quarter. While they did not score in the final period, their defense held South to just five points and they held on for the 10-point win.

Dessarae Mudd came off the bench to score five points for the Lady Cougars. Chaley Trail added four points and eight rebounds.

Brooklyn Williams and Karlie Blain had two points each to complete the scoring. Williams added three rebounds and three steals to her totals for the night.
