Grayson County’s seventh-grade girls basketball team scored the first 15 points of the game at Breckinridge County Middle School Thursday night and went on to roll past the Lady Tigers 27-15.

With the win, the young Lady Cougars, many of whom are playing basketball for the first time, improved their overall record to 6-6.

Kaylan Shull led the Lady Cougars in scoring with nine points and shared the team lead in rebounds with Eleni Eversole with eight apiece.

Shull had four of her points in the first period as the Lady Cougars held Breck scoreless and led 7-0 as the second period began.

Sloane Embry’s lay-up at the 2:37 mark gave the Lady Cougars a 15-point lead before the Lady Tigers ever scored. Breck’s Shayna Stewart hit a 10-foot jumper with 1:17 left to make it 15-2, and Morgan Miller canned a 15-footer with 25 seconds left to make the halftime score 15-4.

Baskets by Shull and Embry opening the third quarter ran the lead back to 15 points at 19-4, but Stewart completed an old-fashioned three-point play with under a minute left to cut the margin to 12 points, 19-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers tried to make a game of it in the final period.  Amber Mingus scored on a put-back basket with 4:09 left to play to cut the lead to six points at 21-15, but those would be the last points Breck could manage. The Lady Cougars closed out the game with six straight to make the final margin 12 points.

Eversole finished the night with five points, while Embry and Desarae Mudd had four each for the Lady Cougars. Brooklyn Williams had three points, and Chaley Trail added two to complete the scoring.
