The Lady Cougar varsity volleyball team got off to a flying start last Tuesday hosting Breckinridge County, but the Lady Tigers were able to completely turn the tables in taking the match two sets to one.

In the earlier games, the freshman and JV squads had little trouble in winning 2-0 matches by big scores.

VARSITY

In the first set, the Lady Cougars won the first rally point, then got three straight aces from Andrea Pauley to race to a 4-0 lead. The Lady Cougars won two more points before the Lady Tigers were able to side out, but Grayson County just kept expanding on the lead.

The Lady Tigers had error after error in the first set, allowing the Lady Cougars to run away to a 25-10 victory.

But in the second set, things began to turn around. All the shots Breck had been putting in the net or out of bounds began falling in. The setters began putting the ball on the mark and the hitters kept sending them down.

The Lady Cougars again took an early lead behind Pauley’s serving, but the Lady Tigers responded with five straight points to take the first lead of the day enjoyed by any of the Breckinridge County teams, 5-4.

They expanded the lead to three points at 9-12, but Grayson County won an extended volley, then got kills from Pauley and Erica Clemons to tie the score at 12-12 before giving up a side-out.

The score was tied twice more before Breck scored three unanswered points to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Grayson County pulled to within a point at 21-22, but Breck won the next point. Valerie Kennedy served an ace to pull it to set-point, and when Clemons put a kill-attempt in the net, the match was tied at 1-1.

With Kennedy serving in the final set leading 5-7, the Lady Tigers scored six straight to lead 5-13 and the Lady Cougars were pretty much done. Grayson County pulled to within two points of the lead twice, but Breck pulled away to win going away, 18-25.

JV

Grayson County never trailed in this match, but it was close in the early going. They led by just three, 9-6 when Lauren Crawford took the serve. Two Breck hitting errors and an ace from Crawford pushed the lead to six points, 12-6.

Following a Breck service error, Felicia Higdon served six straight points, including an ace and a kill by Amber Smith, and led 18-7. They went on to a 21-10 win in the first set.

The Lady Cougars scored the first six points of the second set before grabbing a 16-3 lead. They went on to win the final set 21-7.

FRESHMEN

The young Lady Cougars never trailed in either set in taking the match 21-14, 21-13. They held early leads of 7-2, and 13-5 before the Lady Tigers began playing together a little better.

Breck was able to pull to within three points of the lead at 13-10 and the margin stayed at three to four points until the Lady Cougars a point off serve that made it 18-13.

Following a side out, Grayson County served at 19-14 and Katie Newton’s ace brought it to set-point. On the following serve, Breck’s return bounced off the speakers above the court giving the win to the Lady Cougars.

In the second set, Grayson County built an early 9-1 lead, only to see the visitors pull back to within 10-8. Three straight points put the Lady Cougars out by four, 14-10.

Katherine McCrady took over the serve for the Lady Cougars leading 18-13 and served out for the win. Crawford had a kill on match-point to give the hosts the 21-13 win.
