The Lady Cougars have closed out their summer schedule with a full slate of games over the weekend at the Bullitt East Summer Shootout and five varsity games at the Lady Colonel Summer Shootout at Caverna High on Monday and Tuesday.

On Saturday, the varsity girls suffered a pair of losses, dropping their first game against Assumption, of Louisville, by nine. They then dropped their final game to host Bullitt East by a 56-41 score.

The JV squad picked up a pair of wins, beating Assumption 61-38, then beating Bullitt East 52-36.

On Monday, at Caverna, the Lady Cougar varsity dropped the opening game to the North Hardin Lady Trojans by a score of 49-27 before beating Larue County 43-24.

JV VS BULLITT EAST

Grayson County hit 11 three-pointers in this game against the Lady Chargers’ zone as they turned a close game into a rout. Sophomore Sarah Taylor hit seven of those threes to finish with a game-high 25 points to help the Lady Cougars to the win.

Taylor had a pair of threes in the first quarter as Grayson County took a narrow 11-10 lead.

Back-to-back threes by Kylee Gorby and Alex Crowe gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the first half, seven points at 24-17 with 3:46 left to play, but the Lady Chargers pulled back to within three, 24-21 at the intermission.

The Lady Chargers scored the first four points of the second half to go on top by a point, 25-24, but the Lady Cougars responded with 10 unanswered points, including two more Taylor three-pointers to take control 34-25 with 2:46 left in the period. Taylor closed out the scoring in the third quarter by canning another three with 18 seconds remaining to put the Lady Cougars in front by 11 points, 40-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

Taylor hit two more threes in the fourth quarter, the last one coming with 6:19 to play that increased the lead to 16 points and Grayson County maintained that margin until the end.

Gorby was the only other Lady Cougar in double figures, finishing with 10 points. The freshman point guard had a fine all-round game, finishing with six rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Halee Johnston scored seven points and led the Lady Cougars on the boards with nine rebounds. Crowe also had a fine game, hitting two threes to finish with six points and adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Melody Embry had four points to complete the Lady Cougar scoring. Freshman Jordan Decker did not score but added four assists and three steals to the Lady Cougar effort.

VARSITY VS

BULLITT EAST.

Poor first-half free-throw shooting put the Lady Cougars into a hole from which they never recovered. Grayson County was 2-of-8 from the line in the first quarter and was just 1-of-7 in the second. Their 3-of-15 shooting worked out to just 20 percent and they trailed by 12 at the half, 24-12.

The Lady Cougars turned things around from the line in the second half, hitting 81 percent from the foul line on 17-of-21 shooting, but that worked out to an overall percentage of just 55 percent.

Still, the Lady Cougars made a run at their hosts, pulling to within five points of the lead in the third quarter, 35-30 on a three-pointer from Crowe with 2:09 left in the period. But the Lady Chargers outscored Grayson County 21-11 the rest of the way to seal the win.

Shelbi Tyra had just one point in the first half, but scored 15 in the second to lead the Lady Cougars in scoring. She also pulled down 11 rebounds to record a double-double in a losing effort.

Moriah Ashley had eight points and Kelli Williams added seven. Crowe finished with five points, Taylor added three and Johnston had two to round out the scoring.

VARSITY VS NORTH HARDIN

The Lady Cougars have been playing without senior point guard Hannah Anderson since their first set of game at Ohio County, and they were also without Chelsea Pharris in these last few games after the sophomore was injured in a very rough game against Franklin County Friday night at Bullitt East.

The loss of those two was evident against North Hardin, a very quick, athletic team who absolutely ruled the boards and got nearly every loose ball.

A layup by Ashley with 12:20 left in the first half pulled the Lady Cougars to within four points at 11-7, but they would never be closer. The Lady Trojans outscored them 14-4 the rest of the half to lead 25-11 heading into the second half of play.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Taylor and Williams pulled the Lady Cougars to within nine points, 29-20 with 16:41 left to play, but the Lady Trojans responded by scoring 13 unanswered points to lead 42-20 and put the game away with 8:43 left to play.

Tyra was the only Lady Cougar in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Williams had eight, Ashley had four, Taylor had three and Johnston closed things out with two points.

VARSITY VS LARUE COUNTY

Larue County has a young squad that plays a pressing style and figures to be very tough in the future, but after playing the Lady Cougars close in the first half, wilted in the second.

Moriah Ashley’s 15-footer at the 15:57 mark of the first half put the Lady Cougars in front 3-2 and they held that lead for most of the first half.

The Lady Hawks tied the score at 14-14 with 2:59 left, then went ahead with two minutes left on 1-of-2 free throws. But Crowe scored off a pass from Johnston with 51 seconds left and Grayson County led by a point, 16-15 at the half.

The lead changed hands twice at the beginning of the second half before Larue tied it at 22-22 at the 13:12 mark. That would be their last gasp.

Grayson County went on an 18-0 run that put them in charge 40-22 with 4:37 remaining to be played and they coasted to the win.

Tyra was the only player in double figures, finishing with 12 points and leading the team with five rebounds. Ashley had eight points, while Williams had six.

Crowe and Taylor finished with five points each, while Johnston had three. Gorby and Embry had two points apiece to complete the scoring. Gorby also led the team with four assists.
