With gas costing more than $3.50 a gallon spilling five gallons on the ground was not only an issue for the man who spilled the gas, but also became an issue for the local fire department.

When a truck driver filling up at Pit Road Food Mart lost track of his fill-up and overflowed the tank on his truck, store management had to call the fire officials to help clean up the spill.

The Leitchfield Fire Department responded to the gas spill on HIghway 54 around 11 a.m. Monday morning.

“The driver got out some rags and tried to clean up the spill with rags,” said store manager Doug Clark. “It did not do much good because there was a lot more spilled than he thought. So we called the fire department to clean it up.”

Firefighters spread a substance called “oil dry” over the spill and soaked up the excess gasoline.

“We can clean up a spill of gas with cat litter,” said Clark. “But there was so much that I was afraid someone might flip a cigarette and then we would have a real problem.”
