The good news was that junior Kelli Williams had a career night on her birthday, scoring 24 points and leading the team with six assists. Add to that sophomore Shelbi Tyra's 22 points and eight rebounds and the Lady Cougars put up 74 points against the Lady Eagles.
The bad news, though, was that Ohio County hit nine three-pointers, got scoring from 11 different players, put three of them in double-figures and nearly reached the century mark in a 99-74 blowout win.
It was a situation where the Lady Cougars played about as well as they were capable of playing, but just did not have the depth of quality players to stay with the Lady Eagles.
Ohio's Mariah Robinson showed why she leads the Third region in scoring as she sliced and diced her way to a team-leading 24 points. Senior point guard Courtney Albin hit four three-pointers on the night and finished with 23 points.
The Lady Cougars stayed with their rivals in the first quarter as the lead changed hands five times. But after Williams scored on a long jumper with 1:05 remaining to put the Lady Cougars in front 15-14, Ohio County scored 10 unanswered points and took the lead for good.
Robinson scored on a rebound basket, then Albin buried a three to make it 19-15 with 27 seconds left. Robinson then came up with a steal and was fouled with 5.7 seconds left in the period. Her two free throws made it 21-15 as the first quarter ended.
The Lady Cougars missed on their first possession and Robinson completed the run with another three to put the Lady Eagles up by nine points, 24-15.
Grayson County stayed close, getting to within three points at the 6:35 mark. They trailed by just four points, 30-26 with 5:15 left in the half when Ohio County went on a run that took the Lady Cougars out of the game for good.
Olivia Millsaps started a 12-0 run with a rebound basket, then completed the run with a lay-up at the 3:39 mark to put her team up by 16 points, 42-26. The Lady Eagles led 50-34 at the half.
The Lady Cougars desperately tried to stay with Ohio in the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles just kept separating themselves from the home team. By the end of the period they led by 25 points, 75-50 and the only thing left to figure out would be whether or not the Lady Eagles would break 100 points in the game.
Ohio's Mallory Griffin hit a three-pointer with nine seconds left to give her team 99 points, but after a Lady Cougar turnover, they were unable to get a shot off as the buzzer ended the game.
Jensen Keown joined Albin and Robinson in double-figures with 12 points for the Lady Eagles.
Moriah Ashley and Hannah Anderson both scored seven points for the Lady Cougars, while Sarah Taylor had six on a pair of three-pointers. Alex Crowe added four points, while Jordan Decker and Halee Johnston had two each to complete the scoring.
