Grayson County's varsity girls continued their fine overall team play Monday night with an impressive 62-28 win over visiting Whitesville Trinity Monday night in Cougar Gym.

The Lady Cougars (11-2) put three players into double-figures and got double-double performances from Shelbi Tyra and Chelsea Pharris as they totally dominated play against the Lady Raiders (6-7).

Tyra led all scorers in the game with 21 points, and added a game-high 14 rebounds as well. Pharris had nine points and seven rebounds in the first quarter and finished the night with 13 points and 11 boards.

Junior Kelli Williams had another stellar night at guard for the Lady Cougars, scoring 12 points and adding six rebounds and a team-high five assists as well.

The Lady Cougars have made a living this season being unselfish with the ball. Against the Lady Raiders they dished out 16 assists on their 26 made baskets.

Coming into the game, Head Coach Roy King was concerned about the post play of Whitesville's Lily Crisp, who was the major difference in the Lady Raiders' 53-46 win over Butler County last week. But Pharris and Tyra combined to limit Crisp's chances inside. They held Crisp to just 12 points, four of which came in the fourth quarter against mainly bench players.

Whitesville tied the score 2-2 on a Crisp basket at the 6:56 mark of the first period, but the Lady Cougars then reeled off 12 unanswered points to go up 14-2 with 1:46 left in the period. They led by 15 points, 19-4 at the half.

Whitesville tried to make a run at Grayson County in the third quarter. Grayson County led by as many as 19 points in the period, but a lay-up by Ashley Aud with 2:55 left cut the lead to 11 points, 25-14.

But the Lady Cougars responded by closing out the period with a 9-2 run to jack the lead back up to 19 points, 34-16 heading into the fourth quarter and they were never concerned again.

Grayson County removed any doubt about the outcome by clamping down defensively and holding the Lady Raiders to just four points in the final period.

Freshman Alex Crowe had five points for the Lady Cougars, while eighth-graders Halee Johnston and Kylee Gorby had four each. Melody Embry scored two points and Hannah Anderson closed out the scoring with one.
