The sidewalk extension project on 259 North (Brandenburg Road) is estimated to open for Leitchfield residents by the end of April 2008.
Public Works Director Darrell Harrell said, “It took over a year to get where we are now. The project was approved in the fall of 2006.”
KC Construction of Leitchfield was awarded the $122,190 contract, and plans are to extend the sidewalk 2,800 linear feet.
“A lot of citizens on the north side were requesting the addition,” added Harrell.
The current sidewalk for the area ended at John E. Foster's residence, but with the new addition it will reach almost to the bypass.
Funding for the project came through an 80/20 Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant. Once the extension is complete the Public Works Department will be reimbursed $90,000 of the initial investment.
“I took the opportunity to apply for the grant, and was fortunate enough to get the approval,” replied Harrell.
An official start date was slated for December 10, but production did not begin until December 17 because of harsh weather conditions.
