On the road in their season opener, the Cougar seventh-grade basketball team got a monster night from Rance Whobrey and they went on to blast the Bowling Green Purples 49-26.

Whobrey, who came into his own last year as a sixth-grader, showed he should be on his way to an outstanding seventh-grade year. He led all scorers with 28 points, including three three-pointers, and just missed a triple-double performance as he collected nine rebounds and nine steals. He also had four assists on the night.

The Cougars left little doubt about the outcome of this one as they scored the first 13 points of the game and led 13-2 at the end of the first period. Whobrey scored 10 of his team's 13 points in the period.

A Braxton Williams three-pointer opening the second period increased the lead to 13 points at 16-2. After the Purples scored, Williams hit back-to-back jumpers to make it a 16-point lead, 20-4 with 3:34 left in the half. They led by 11, 25-14 at the half. Williams joined Whobrey in double-figure scoring with 13 points on the night, and added a pair of rebounds and three assists.

Grayson County outscored the Purples 12-4 in the third period and led by 19 points, 37-18 heading into the final period of play.

Neparius Shannon and Brandon Pruitt had eight points each to lead the Purples.

Dustin Crain, Ethan Saltsman and Tyler Simcoe all scored two points, while Grant Akridge and Ty Davis had one each to complete the Cougar scoring.

The Cougars will host St. Romuald this Thursday at Cougar Gym. Seventh-grade action begins at 5:30 p.m.
