Grayson County Circuit Court Judge Anthony Miller reached his decision on October 23. Initially the fire district was issuing requests for payment in fire dues.
Each resident was expected to pay $50 each year. It allowed three visits from the department before additional billing kicked in.
That attempt was unsuccessful. Not enough citizens were paying their dues. This is the reason the department opted for other means of funding.
Anneta has been a taxing district since November 14, 1986. They are the only taxing fire district in the county.
Fire department member James Kinser said the department is its own entity. The Grayson County Water Board is the same way.
An initial rate change was never set in 1986. KRS 75.040 authorizes the fire department to not exceed ten cents per $100.
If the citizens disagree they can petition for a referendum for dissolution of the same. A petition of this nature results in certain risks.
Volunteer firefighters who risk their health and well-being could quit. Without a fire district home insurance rates could raise.
Failure to obtain fire insurance would result in breach of most mortgages.
Benefits of the levy however could result in income that generates the purchase of new equipment and better training.
Taxes were already printed for 2007. The new rate change will take in to effect next year.
