For the first 48 minutes of the game Thursday evening, the Lady Cougar soccer team was looking like it was headed to a huge upset win over undefeated Muhlenberg South.

The Lady Suns had come into the game undefeated at 9-0-1, but eight minutes into the second half Grayson County held a 2-1 lead.

But then the world righted itself on its axis and the Lady Suns scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 win. Grayson County fell to 2-8-1 on the season.

The game started routinely enough, with the Lady Suns getting on the board in the eighth minute of play when sensational sophomore Catherine Schmidt scored the first of her four goals to give her team a 1-0 lead.

But things became weird when just a few seconds later the Lady Cougars got even when a Leanna Lancaster corner-kick went in the goal off a Lady Suns' player to even things at 1-1.

The Lady Cougar defense then held off the Lady Suns and at the half it was still 1-1.

Grayson County then shocked the Lady Suns in the first minute of the second half when junior Hannah Tarrance took a corner kick from Lancaster and shot it past the Lady Suns goal keeper to make it 2-1.

But South got even in the 49th minute of play when Schmidt took a South corner kick and beat Hannah McCloud in goal. A minute later, Schmidt beat four Lady Cougar defenders to a long ball ahead and beat McCloud again to give her team the lead for good at 3-2.

Schmidt got her fourth goal of the night four minutes later when the Lady Cougar defense again allowed a ball to get behind them and Schmidt took it to the goal one-on-one against McCloud.

South got some insurance in the 71st minute of play when the Lady Cougar defense mysteriously failed to go for a loose ball in front of the goal and Kacey Farley beat McCloud to make it 5-2.

The Lady Cougars will be back in action this Tuesday, September 25 when they host Warren Central at Cougar Field. Action begins at 5:30 p.m, with the JV match to follow.
