Property taxes for 2008 will raise four percent more revenue for the City of Clarkson.

The first reading of the property tax ordinance was read on August 13. Clarkson City Council members approved the motion. A second reading will be on September 10. City Clerk and Treasurer Alicia Hayes will then submit the proposal.

The next step will be when the PVA processes the changes to Clarkson property taxes and then sends out the paperwork to residents. Tax bills will start being sent out in October.

According to Hayes, real estate rates will decrease to .0795 cents per $100 valuation. Tangible rates will increase to .1106 cents per $100. The PVA's 2007 assessment for Clarkson showed Real Estate at $24,133,068. Tangible totals showed $5,107,449. Tangible is a merchant's inventory. It considered anything used to operate a business.

For residential purposes a boat, farm equipment, or livestock is tangible.

In 2006 real estate taxes were .08 cents per $100. Tangible was .1106 per $100.

Clarkson Mayor Bonnie Henderson explained more about the change in rates. It would potentially not affect consumers previous property tax totals.

"More money will be generated for the city by the tax increase," said Henderson. "But citizens may not have to pay any more."

The reason for the increase in rates is to help produce more revenue for the city.
