For the past three weeks, the pool has been exceptionally busy, explained Helen Polk, concession manager for the pool.
“It's been really good so far,” she said. “We've had the three schools here two or three days each week and then the general public on top of that. The pool is quite full until 2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon.”
Tuesday morning, a line of thunderstorms hit Grayson County and Polk said that didn't even deter the attendance. “We still have quite a few here right now even though it rained this morning,” she added.
She estimated that between 30-50 adults attend the city pool each day throughout the week and that number doesn't include the oodles of kids who attend as part of school programs.
“The hotter it gets, the more that come,” Polk said.
Wes Whitmore, the pool manager, said this year has so far been considerably busier than last year.
“So far it's been busier because of the heat,” explained Whitmore. “We've seen bigger numbers this year and I'm expecting even bigger numbers when the ice cream fair rolls around.”
Whitmore said during the week between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., 100 to 150 children get to take advantage of the city pool. Daycare students from Lawler, Clarkson, Caneyville, Wilkey and Educational Ladder participate.
He said the pool usually slows down around 4 p.m.
Another aspect of the city pool is swimming lessons, added Whitmore. “I would guess by the end of summer, 400 to 500 kids will have taken swimming lessons here at the city pool.”
Admission to the city pool is $4 for 11-years-old and up; $3 for ages 3-10 and children two and under can get in free.
