LEITCHFIELD - The middle school boys basketball team hosted Edmonson County on Wednesday in the first of two summer scrimmage contests, with both the seventh and eighth grade Cougar teams recording victories.

The two teams will complete their summer sessions next week when the Cougars travel to Brownsville to play the Wildcats one more time. Each game was played in two 10-minute halves, with the seventh grade playing two games and the eighth grade also playing two.

In the seventh-grade opener, the Cougars scored the first 13 points of the game before the Wildcats were able to get on the board and they crusied to a 26-11 win. The second game played out much the same way. Grayson County led 13-4 at the half and they went on to take a 19-6 win.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME ONE

This was a seesaw affiar in the first period. Trailing 4-3, the Cougars' Rance Whobrey hit a three-pointer to put his team up by two, 6-4. The Cougars led by four points twice in the period, the last time coming at 10-6 with 3:32 left in the period. But the Wildcats scored the last four points of the period to tie it at 10-10 heading into the second half.

Grayson County opened the period with an 8-0 run to go up 18-10, and Edmonson County never got closer than five points, 18-13, the rest of the way, holding on to take a 22-15 win.

Whobrey and Jakob Clemons led the Cougars in scoring with six points apiece. Brady Clemons added five, while Billy Clemons and Tyler Willen had two each. Ethan Meredith closed out the scoring with one point.

GAME TWO

Neither team established much offense in the first half. Edmonson County took a 6-4 lead with 2:53 left and both teams went scoreless the rest of the way.

When Grayson County opened with an 8-0 run at the beginning of the second half they established control of the game, taking a 12-6 lead at the 7:12 mark.

The Wildcats stopped the run with a basket at the 4:16 mark to make it 12-8, but those would be the only points they scored in the half as Grayson County went on for a 19-8 win.

Brady Clemons led all scorers with eight points, while Whobrey had five, including the game's only three-pointer. Willen had four points, while Zach Berry had two to complete the Cougar scoring.
