The Cougars grabbed an early eight-point lead, but were held to just two points in the second period as the Wildcats came back to tie things up at the half. There were then five ties in the second quarter before the Wildcats took the lead at the end of the period, then held on to record the win.
Forward Daniel Buckles came out hot for the Cougars in the first period, hitting a pair of three pointers and scoring eight of his team-high 12 points. His three-pointer at the 1:26 mark gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night at 10-2.
The Wildcats' nifty point guard, Kacy Clemmons, used a nice pull-up move to hit a 10-footer in the lane with 1:08 left and the first period ended with the Cougars on top 10-4.
Wildcats guard Aaron Duncan, who led all scorers in the game with 17 points, scored six straight points opening the second quarter to tie things at 10 apiece with 3:59 left in the first half. Buckles scored again with 1:32 left in the half to put the Cougars back on top 12-10, but Clemmons closed out the half by hitting a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left and the teams went into the intermission tied at 12-12.
The two teams were never more than two points apart throughout most of the third period. Grayson County took leads at 14-12, 16-14, and 18-16, only to see the Wildcats answer each time and tie things back up again.
The Wildcats then put four unanswered points together to take a 20-18 lead, but the Cougars answered with four free throws to go back up 22-20 with 2:29 left in the period.
Edmonson's Logan Raymer scored at the 2:22 mark to tie once more before Hunter Gary scored with 1:29 left to put the Cougars back in front 24-22. That would be the last time the Cougars saw the lead.
Duncan tied it once more with 41 seconds remaining, then Clemmons put a dagger through the Cougars' hearts when he pulled up for a three-pointer that beat the buzzer at the end of the period to send the Wildcats into the fourth quarter with a 27-24 lead.
Raymer hit one of two free throws at the start of the fourth period, then Duncan hit a three-pointer. Ryan Cowles ended the 11-0 run by hitting a pair of free throws and the Wildcats had taken a 33-24 lead with 3:00 left to play.
Grayson County was able to pull to within five points of the lead, 36-31 with 21 seconds left, but it was too little, too late.
Clemmons joined Duncan in double-figure scoring with 11 points. Gary finished the night with six points for the Cougars, while Brady Clemons added five. Evand Donald had four points, while Corey Travis and Jacob Long had two each to complete the scoring.
The middle school Cougars will be back in action next Thursday, January 25 when they will play host to the Butler County Bears. Seventh-grade action begins at 5:30 p.m. with the eighth-grade contest to follow.
