BRANDENBURG - The Cougar freshman boys ran their season record to 10-1 with a pair of wins Saturday morning at Meade County High School.

In the opening game, the Cougars came from behind in the early going to hand the Ohio County Eagles a 42-40 loss. In the second game, they allowed the Edmonson County Wildcats to stay in the game before taking a 10-point win, 34-24.

OHIO COUNTY

The Cougars found themselves in a deep hole after just a minute and a half when the Eagles hit a pair of three pointers and a lay-up for an eight-point lead.

Following a timeout, the Cougars came roaring back with seven straight points to get back in the game. Cody Mattingly hit a pair of three pointers in the opening period and the Cougars trailed by just a point, 13-12 heading into the second quarter.

A short jumper by Aaron Deviney at the 5:04 mark gave Grayson County its first lead of the day, 14-13. The lead changed hands three more times in the period before a Deviney lay-up with 1:31 left put the Cougars in front for good. They led by five, 23-18 at the half.

Starting the third period, the Cougars put together a 10-4 run to grab their largest lead of the game, 33-22 at the 2:41 mark, but the Eagles weren't done yet. Ohio County outscored the Cougars 9-2 the rest of the period and trailed by just four, 35-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Eagle baskets by Jeremiah Baxley and Colby Daugherty opening the final period tied the score at 35-35. The Cougars turned the ball over on their first four possessions of the fourth period, but baskets by Dustin Thomas and Mattingly put them back in front by four, 39-35 with 2:21 left to play.

Daugherty scored with 1:27 left to make it a two-point game, but a Thomas lay-up and a Deviney free throw made it 42-37 with 14 seconds left. Reserve player Zach Geary hit a three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining to pull the Eagles to within two points, but when Grayson County was able to get the ball inbounds, time ran out.

Zak Baize led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points, while Mattingly led all scorers with 14. Deviney joined Mattingly in double figures with 11 points and led the team in rebounds with seven. Deviney added three assists and four steals to his all-around totals.

Tyler Saltsman scored seven points, and Thomas had six. Point guard Bryant Clemons had four points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

EDMONSON COUNTY

After the Wildcats tied the score at 2-2, the Cougars ran off seven unanswered, including a Mattingly three-pointer, to lead 9-2 with 1:53 left in the opening period. Neither team scored the rest of the period.

Kacy Clemmons buried a three for Edmonson to start the second period, but the Cougars responded with six straight to take their largest lead of the half, 15-5 with 1:10 left. The Wildcats' Logan Raymer then beat the buzzer to cut his team's deficit to seven points heading into the intermission.

The Wildcats cut the margin to three points, 17-14 with 57 seconds left in the third quarter, but Mattingly hit three free throws with 35 seconds left and Clemons hit a 15-footer with eight seconds remaining and the Cougars led by eight, 22-14 heading into the final period of play.

Clemons scored on a lay-up and was fouled at the 3:47 mark and his free throw gave the Cougars an 11-point lead. Saltsman then scored on a lay-up at the 3:29 mark and the Cougars had their largest lead of the day, 13 points at 31-18. The Wildcats got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Mattingly was the only player to reach double figures, scoring 10 to lead the Cougars, and added four assists and three steals. Saltsman had eight points and Clemons had seven. Thomas scored three points and led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.

Deviney, Steven Jones and Dylan Snyder all had two points to complete the Cougar scoring.
