Chelsea Pharris lit up the scoreboard with 17 points in an easy, 43-23 opening-round win over Glasgow. In the semi-final, the Lady Cougars faced Metcalfe County for the third time in a week and won 31-22. The Lady Hornets handed Grayson County its only defeat of the year last weekend in pool play of the Bowling Green Invitational, but the Lady Cougars got a rematch in the final and beat them 26-19.
Grayson County was scheduled to play Edmonson County in Tuesday's final. The Lady Wildcats upset previously undefeated Barren County 38-37 in the opening round, then beat Monroe County in the semi-final. The Lady Cougars have faced Edmonson County twice already this season, winning 36-18 in Brownsville, then winning 34-24 at Cougar Gym.
In the opening game against Glasgow (2-7), Grayson County got off to a slow start before pouring it on the outmatched Scotties. The first two minutes of the game were scoreless, but Pharris hit a rebound basket at the 3:48 mark and the Lady Cougars were off and running. They scored 10 straight before the Scotties got on the board, and led 12-3 at the end of the period. Pharris scored eight of her 17 points in the first quarter.
The Lady Cougars increased the lead to 16 points, 25-9 at the half, then cruised in the second half for the 20-point win. Guard Alex Crowe scored eight points for the Lady Cougars, while Moriah Ashley had six.
Halee Johnston added five points, Kylee Gorby had three, and Sarah Taylor and Ashleigh Graham had two apiece to complete the scoring.
Though they never trailed against Metcalfe County (15-8), the Lady Cougars were locked in a struggle in the first half against the Lady Hornets. Grayson County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and led 6-4 heading into the second.
A 15-footer by Ashley at the 3:57 mark of the second period gave the Lady Cougars a six-point lead, 12-6, but Metcalfe answered with six straight to tie it 12-12 with 1:25 left in the half. Following a steal by Johnston, Crowe buried a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock to give the Lady Cougars a 15-12 lead at the half.
A Pharris rebound basket capped a 7-0 run at the start of the second half that put Grayson County in the driver's seat at 22-12. With seven seconds left in the period, Taylor hit a shot from just inside the arc that gave the Lady Cougars a 12-point lead, 26-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
Another Pharris rebound basket at the 3:42 mark of the fourth gave Grayson County its largest lead of the game, 15 points at 30-15. After coach Josh Belcher emptied his bench, the Lady Hornets were able to close out the game with a 7-1 run to make the score a little more respectible.
Ashley led all scorers with 11 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Crowe again scored eight points and had three boards and a steal. Pharris finished with six points and was the co-leader with Gorby in rebounds with seven. Gorby scored four points and Taylor had two to complete the scoring.
