The Lady Cougars (15-1) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but an 8-1 Ohio County run in the fourth quarter cut the lead to four points, 37-33, with 1:42 left to play. The Lady Cougars were then able to hold the Lady Eagles (7-5) scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Big games by three Lady Cougars helped them to beat the visitors.
Chelsea Pharris just missed a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling down nine rebounds. She also had four steals and two assists in her all-around fine performance. Pharris helped get her team off to a 12-5 first quarter start, when she scored two points and had four boards and two assists.
Moriah Ashley led all scorers with 15 points, and seventh-grader Halee Johnston came off the bench to score six points and pull down eight rebounds.
Grayson County scored the first six points of the game and led by as many as eight points in the first period. Ashley had eight of her points in the period, four of which came off assists from Pharris.
Six straight points in the second period, including two straight baskets from Pharris, gave the Lady Cougars an 11 point lead, 18-7, at the 4:03 mark. A putback basket by Johnston at the 2:37 mark gave them their largest lead of the game, 12 points at 21-9. They led 23-13 at the half.
Ohio County closed to within six points on a basket by Sabrina Ruby at the 3:30 mark of the second period, but a 7-2 Grayson County run, capped by Sarah Taylor's three pointer ran the margin back to 11 points, 32-21 with 1:20 left. Grayson County led by nine, 34-25 heading into the fourth quarter.
Pharris scored on a rebound basket at the start of the fourth period to give her team an 11-point lead, but the Lady Eagles answered with six straight to make it 36-31 with 2:34 left to play.
Kylee Gorby hit one of two free throws at the 1:58 mark, but Sarah Wood scored at the 1:42 mark to cut the lead to just four points, 37-33. That turned out to be the final points Ohio County would score. The Lady Cougars held them scoreless in their last six possessions and Johnston scored with 32 seconds remaining to assure her team of the win.
Taylor finished the night with five points and Gorby had one to complete the scoring.
This weekend, the Lady Cougars will be playing in the 13th annual Barren County Middle School Tip-Off Basketball Classic. They open the tournament against Glasgow in a 10:45 a.m. game on Saturday. If they win that game, they will play at 2:30 against the winner of Monroe County and Bazzell. The finals will be held on Tuesday, November 21 at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Cougars travel to Muhlenberg North on Monday, November 20 for a game with the Lady Stars. The eighth-grade game follows the seventh-grade contest, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
