The seventh-grade girls got things off on the right foot, leading from start to finish for a 35-19 decision. The eighth-grade team also went wire-to-wire with the lead in a 39-22 win. Both teams now stand at 4-0 for the season.
SEVENTH-GRADE GAME
The Lady Cougars' pressure defense got to the Lady Suns (4-2) in the early going. Grayson County forced six turnovers in the first quarter, allowing the Lady Cougars to take a 10-4 lead into the second period.
Grayson County opened the second period with a 6-1 run that gave them an 11-point lead 16-5 at the 2:33 mark, but they led by just seven, 16-9 at the half.
A rebound basket by Halee Johnston and a jumper by Claire Crawford at the start of the third quarter put the lead back to 11 points, 20-9, at the 4:19 mark. They led by nine, 24-15 heading into the fourth quarter.
With the double-digit lead, coach Wendy Butler had been using a lot of her bench players in the second and third periods, but at the start of the fourth she brought her starters back and it paid off with a big run that put the game out of reach.
Crawford started things by taking a pass from point guard Kylee Gorby and scoring on a layup. Crawford was also fouled on the play and her free throw gave the Lady Cougars a 12-point lead.
Three straight Lady Suns turnovers led to layups by Gorby and in less than a minute, the Lady Cougars had scored nine straight to lead by 18 points, 33-15.
After that Butler began substituting again and her bench players played out the final five minutes. Grayson County got scoring from eight different players, led by Gorby with a game-high 10 points. The savvy point guard also had seven rebounds and three assists in the game.
Lauren Crawford scored six points and twin sister Claire added five. Johnston and Erin Marshall both scored four points, but Marshall led the team in rebounding with eight and Johnston added five. Jamilyn Hall, Courtney Vogel and Taylor Higdon completed the scoring with two points each, and Vogel added five rebounds to the mix. Jordan Decker did not score in the game, but she came down with four rebounds to help her team.
EIGHTH-GRADE GAME
Chelsea Pharris scored five of her game-high 11 points as the Lady Cougars reeled off nine straight to lead 9-0 at the 3:43 mark of the first quarter. A layup Kylee Gorby at the 1:52 mark increased the Lady Cougar lead to 11 points at 13-2 before they went into the second period leading by nine.
Moriah Ashley did not score in this game, but she controlled the boards for Grayson County. In the second period, Ashley recorded five rebounds and she finished her night with a game-high nine boards. Fourteen different Lady Cougar players recorded rebounds on the night as Grayson County controlled the action.
Gorby scored seven of her nine points in the second period and the Lady Cougars outscored South 15-5 to lead by 19 points, 28-9 at the half.
When Pharris scored on an inbounds pass from Alex Crowe at the 5:37 mark of the first period, the Lady Cougars held their largest lead of the night, 21 points at 30-9. Crowe closed out the scoring in the third period with a long jumper with three seconds left that put the lead back to 21 points, 36-15 heading into the fourth quarter, and the Lady Cougars cruised home to win by 17.
Point guard Sarah Taylor scored eight points for the Lady Cougars, while Crowe finished with four. Jessie McGuffin had three points, while Halee Johnston and Lauren Crawford had two apiece to close out the scoring.
Grayson County will take on the Butler County Lady Bears at home on Monday beginning at 5:30 p.m., then will travel to Hancock County on Thursday. Those games are also scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
