LEITCHFIELD - The Cougars soccer teams split a pair of games at home Wednesday evening, with the JV squad winning and the varsity losing to visiting Ohio County.

The varsity Cougars got goals from freshmen Steven Jones and Christian Higdon, but it was not enough to prevent a 3-2 loss to the Eagles. The varsity fell to 4-9-1 with the loss.

The JV team got a pair of goals from sophomore Chris Stewart in their 6-2 win over the Eagles. The JV s moved to 8-2-1 on the season.

VARSITY

All the scoring in this one was done in the first half. Both teams had opportunities in the opening minutes, but neither could get it into the net.

Grayson County goalie Kyle McCord came up with a great save in the 23rd minute of play, laying out to stop a crossing shot, then stopping a rebound shot while still on the ground.

Just a few seconds later, though, Ohio County got on the board. Following a foul, senior Jeremy Westerfield took a free kick from about 45 yards out and powered it over McCord's head and into the goal to make it 1-0.

Grayson County tied things at one apiece in the 29th minute. The Cougars put a long ball ahead, behind the Eagle defense, and Jones beat the defenders to the ball, then Jones beat goalie Robert Luttrell with the shot.

The Eagles scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to grab a 3-1 lead. Curtis Espey took a ball behind the Cougar defense and put it past McCord in the 33rd minute to make it 2-1. A short time later, Espey took a nice pass from Westerfield and beat McCord on the right side to make it 3-2.

Just seconds before the end of the first half, the Cougars got a goal to make it 3-2. Doug Fleener took a corner kick and put it just passed the goal, where an Eagle defender tried to head it out. Instead, the ball went right to Higdon, who footed it past Luttrell for the goal.

That would be it for the scoring. Though the Cougars put pressure on the Eagle goal in the closing moments, they just could not get the equalizer.

JV

Ohio County scored first in this game as T. J. Johnson split a pair of Cougar defenders and beat goalie Jordan Hayse to make it 1-0.

The score stayed that way until a flurry of goals in the last eight minutes of the half put the Cougars in charge.

Fleener scored first for the Cougars in the 22nd minute of play. Less than a minute later Stewart had a shot blocked, but the rebound went to sixth-grader Michael Thomas, who put it home to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

A short time later, the Eagle goalie came way out, trying to get to a pass ahead by the Cougars, but Stewart beat him to the ball and put it in to make it 3-1.

The Cougars gave up a goal just before the end of the half, when Johnson got loose down the right side and took it all the way in to beat Hayse. That score made it 3-2 at the half.

In the 35th minute. Fleener took a ball in on goal, then passed to a wide open Stewart who banged it in to make it 4-2.

In the 45th minute, Higdon gathered in a high bouncer about 25 yards out in front of the Eagle goal. He struck the ball strongly at about waist level and put a curving shot into the net to make it 5-2.

The Cougars added a little frosting to the cake in the 47th minute when Jones took a crossing pass from Fleener and put it in the net to make the final score 6-2.

The Cougar soccer team will be back in action on Monday, October 2, when they travel to Morgantown to take on the Butler County Bears. That contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
