A two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 16) at the intersection of Salt River Road and the Thomason Byway sent one person to the hospital. It was the first accident reported on the new bypass.

According to the Leitchfield Police Department, a 1992 Buick Regal driven by Mary L. Douthitt, of Vine Grove, was traveling westbound on Salt River and had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Salt River Road and the William H. Thomason Byway.

Douthitt reportedly told police that after coming to a stop, she looked both ways and “saw nothing coming.”

She then started through the intersection and pulled in front of a 1996 Dodge Caravan driven by Meredith L. Fields, of Upton, that was traveling south along the byway, and reportedly caused the collision.

(Douthitt reported to police that she thought Fields' van may have been in her blind spot.)

According to the LPD report, Fields told police that she saw Douthitt's vehicle stop at the stop sign and then pull out in front of her.

Fields slammed on the brakes and tried the avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful.

Douthitt, Fields and a passenger in Fields' car, Riley Fields, suffered no apparent injuries.

However, a passenger in Douthitt's car, Tristain Douthitt, was transported by the Grayson County EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Those injuries were not reported as life-threatening.

The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m.
