The U.S. Department of Education grant is expected to impact more than 7,000 middle school students by providing professional development and hands-on learning experiences to 8th grade teachers in American History classrooms.
Grayson County is among the 18 counties receiving benefits from the grant, one of only 124 given by the department nationwide. Grayson County Middle School teachers Chris Helm and David Tarrance are involved in the project.
The program will focus on the first 200 years of U.S. history, giving teachers training in new, hands-on delivery techniques to make history classes more exciting.
Partners in the project include the Department of History at Western Kentucky University, the Kentucky Library and Museum at WKU, the Kentucky Humanities Council, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and other national and regional presenters.
History teachers will be attending summer institutes at WKU, including trips to locations of historic significance. Core teachers will present programs to other middle schools in the region, with the goal of finding news ways for students to make lasting connections to history.
GRREC serves 32 districts in south central Kentucky.
