The Grayson County High School Cheerleaders recently returned from the Universal Cheerleading Association's (UCA) camp at the University of Kentucky. While at the camp, the team learned new techniques, cheers, sidelines, dances and overall skills.

At the camp, the teams are evaluated by various UCA camp instructors. Evaluations include home dance routine, camp cheer, Xtreme routine, fan frenzy, and overall camp championship.

The GCHS Cheerleading Team received the honor of Camp Champ in the Xtreme Routine division, which makes them eligible to perform in the Capital One Bowl, in Orlando, Florida, at the end of the year.

The team also received superior ratings in the camp cheer, Xtreme routine and fan frenzy divisions. A superior rating is the highest level of achievement for a team at camp. The team also placed second in the home dance routine, which was prepared before leaving for camp.

In addition to their proficiency in skills, they also received a spirit stick each day at camp which recognizes their positive attitude and overall participation.

Three team members, Tiffany Stone, Tara Bangtson and Mollye Popplewell, were chosen as UCA Camp All-Stars. Those chosen for All-Stars had to perform the Xtreme routine and camp cheer in front of the entire camp. These three were the only members of the GCHS team to try for the All-Stars and all three were chosen.

As All-Stars, the girls received medals and will have the opportunity to go to London for the London New Year's Parade where they would perform before more than a million spectators lining the parade route.

The GCHS Cheerleaders are coached by Leanne Pierce and Erika Johnson.
