BARDSTOWN - The Lady Cougar basketball team faced a tough test last Friday at the Lady Tiger Shootout, not so much because of the teams they faced, but because they had to face them with a severely depleted lineup.

Senior starters Brittany Bird and Molly Beeler were out with illness, and top reserve Shelbi Tyra was sitting out with an ankle injury. And with sophomore guard Kelli Williams away for 10 days in Baltimore, the Lady Cougars were down to just seven players.

In the first game, the varsity faced Mercer County, a pressing, trapping team that applied constant pressure and brought in players in waves. The Lady Cougars stayed with them for awhile, but eventually dropped a 37-23 decision.

In the JV contest, with the Lady Cougars using a mainly middle school lineup, Grayson County fell 35-25 to the Lady Scotties.

The second game saw the Lady Cougar facing John Hardin's Lady Bulldogs, a team they had beaten 41-31 the week before in Elizabethtown. This time the tired Lady Cougars could not stay with the athletic Lady Bulldogs and fell 43-24. They played North Hardin later in the evening, but no results were available for that game.

Against Mercer, the Lady Cougars tied the score at 3-3 at the 15:04 mark, but Mercer hit a three-pointer at 13:57 to grab a lead they would not give up. Rebecca Meredith had seven first half points and Heather Baxter had five, but Grayson County trailed 19-13 at the half.

In the second half, the Lady Scotties put together a 10-0 run that gave them a 32-17 lead with 5:15 to play and they coasted to the victory. Baxter led the Lady Cougars with eight points, while Meredith finished with seven. Tara Snyder had six points and Hannah Anderson, filling in for Bird at the point, finished with two.

In the JV contest, Grayson County got off to a fast start, grabbing a 9-2 lead in the game's first eight minutes, but the Lady Scotties started a comeback that saw them tie the game 16-16 at the half.

In the second half, Mercer scored the first eight points to lead 24-16 at the 14:06 mark. A Tiffany Brooks three-pointer at the 8:57 mark brought the Lady Cougars to within four points of the lead, 27-23, but they would get no closer.

Eighth-grader Chelsea Pharis led the Lady Cougars in scoring with eight points, while Moriah Ashley and Melody Embry had six apiece. Brooks finished with four points and Sarah Taylor had one to round out the scoring.
