At a special called meeting of the Clarkson City Commission Wednesday night (Apr. 26) the commission approved of applying for two grants -- one to benefit law enforcement and the other to help with projects at the city park.

City Clerk-Treasurer Alicia Hayes reported that Clarkson has joined together with several other cities and counties throughout south-central Kentucky to apply for a Homeland Security Grant that would get computers in police cars.

The grant, Hayes said, asks for funds to get 215 mobile data terminals in police cruisers.

If the grant is approved, Clarkson would get two of those computers.

The cost for the mobile data terminals that Clarkson would receive is $19, 568, however, the city wouldn't have to pay anything for the computers if the grant is given approval, Hayes said.

The City of Clarkson also has more plans in store for the park, and it is hoping the Recreational Trails Program Grant, which the commission gave approval Wednesday to apply for, can help with those plans.

Hayes said the city would like to put in picnic areas and a nature trail along the creek at the park.

The total cost of the project would be around $20,500.

The grant the city has applied for is a 50/50 matching grant.

Hayes reported that the 50 percent the city would have to come up with doesn't just have to be donated money. It can also include donated equipment and labor.

And as of now, the city would only have to come up with $1,850 if the grant is approved.
