Despite near freezing temperatures, Clarkson City Commissioners are planning a May opening of the children's playground and cut off registrations for kids softball and baseball at 475.

Commissioners discussed the children's playground at Monday's (Mar. 20) special meeting.

Most of the $35,800 donation, a memorial to the late Mike Marshall, has been spent for a variety of playground equipment that will be located ahead and to the right of the new park entrance.

Mayor Bonnie Henderson said the 475 children who have signed up for baseball and softball “have come from all over the county, but we've had to cut off the sign-ups because we don't have room for any more.”

She thanked city employees and volunteers who turned out last weekend to move dirt and level out more parking area for the expected rush on the park when the weather mends. Work should be done by mid-April, she said.

After an executive session to discuss personnel, Henderson said there was no action taken during the session.

She said after the meeting that the city “probably will fill the police patrol position, but I can't say when right now.”

Former patrolman Shawn Lee was promoted to police chief at the commission's last regular meeting.
