A Leitchfield man was killed Thursday afternoon (March 2) in a head-on collision just west of Big Clifty on U.S. 62.

According to Deputy Matt Darst with the Grayson County Sheriff's Department, a 1994 Chevy Lumina being driven by Kevin D. Saltsman, 48, of Leitchfield, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 62 when he crossed over the center line and struck a westbound 1998 Ford minivan being driven by Audrey D. Casey, 70, of Campbellsville.

The accident occurred in the 8600 block of U.S. 62, about a quarter of a mile west of Risner's Hardware.

Darst said that emergency workers attempted to resuscitate Saltsman at the scene of the accident, but were ultimately not successful.

Saltsman was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

As for Casey, Darst said she was flown directly from the scene by LifeNet to University Hospital in Louisville “with possible severe injuries.”

Darst said that Saltsman's vehicle possibly crossed the center line of the roadway because of a medical condition, however, that won't be known for sure until autopsy results come back, which could take up to eight weeks.

The head-on collision, which occurred just after 12:30 p.m., closed the roadway for nearly two hours.

In addition to the Sheriff's Department and the Kentucky State Police, two Grayson County EMS units, the East Grayson County Fire Department, Clarkson Fire Department and Clarkson Police Department also responded to Thursday's accident.
