Clarkson fires police chief in not-so-closed, closed session

The City of Clarkson is looking for a new police chief.

After a special called meeting of the Clarkson City Commission Monday (Feb. 20), the commission voted unanimously to fire Police Chief Dan Peterson.

The agenda for Monday's meeting simply read “To discuss personnel.”

However, anyone walking into City Hall for the meeting knew what it was about.

A matter which Mayor Bonnie Henderson said she had wanted to keep quiet and “was careful not to discuss it with anyone” took a very public turn when a letter written from Henderson to Peterson listing several complaints against him was posted on the door of City Hall by Peterson on Friday (Feb. 17).

The letter, which was written by Henderson on Feb. 14, was given to Peterson a day later, Henderson said.

The letter, which remained posted on the door at Monday night's meeting, informed Peterson (who was hired by the city on February 16, 1999) that at the meeting the commission would hold a hearing and then vote on the following:
