HARNED - The Cougar eighth-graders began competition in the Green River Valley Conference basketball tournament Saturday morning with a 67-27 dismantling of Butler County.
That win put them into the semi-final round Monday evening against Muhlenberg North. The Cougars won that game 52-43 to advance to Thursday night's final against Muhlenberg South.
Against the Bears, the Cougars put three players into double-figures, led by Tyler Saltsman's 25 points. Cody Mattingly had 11 points, as did Aaron Deviney. All of Deviney's points came in the first half of play.
The Cougars appeared to be trying for the shutout win against the overmatched Bears. With the Cougars' full-court trapping defense scoring 21 points off of 16 first-half Bear turnovers, Grayson County scored the first 17 points of the game, then led 35-4 at the half.
In the second half, head coach George Meredith called off the press, and the Bears began getting more shot opportunities and put up more points on the board. But by then, things had been pretty well decided. The Cougars led 52-15 at the end of the third quarter.
Butler County cut the lead to 32 points with 2:24 left in the game, but the Cougars scored the last eight points to win by 40.
Jason Byrd led the Bears in scoring with 11 points, while teammate Clay Daugherty added 10.
Bryant Clemons and Michael Bounds both finished with five points and Dustin Thomas had four. Alex Henderson, Brad Alexander and Jacob Boone all scored two points to complete the Cougar scoring.
