BROWNSVILLE - Behind a double-double by senior Jared Clemons, the Cougar varsity improved to 13-5 overall and a perfect 6-0 in district play with a 71-46 thumping of Edmonson County's Wildcats.
Clemons, who finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, was one of four Grayson County players to reach double-figures in scoring. Josh Smith hit three three-pointers and finished with 13 points. Kyle Skaggs also hit three threes and had 11 points, while Travis Johnston had 10 points for the Cougars. Clemons also hit three three-pointers on the night.
The Cougars never trailed. They scored the first four points of the game, then ran off 10 straight following the Wildcats' first basket to take a 14-2 lead at the 1:44 mark of the first period.
The first quarter ended with a pair of three-pointers before the second period began with three threes. Skaggs buried a three with six seconds remaining, but Edmonson's Josh Webb beat the buzzer with a three of his own to make it 19-8 heading into the second period.
Dustin Lindsey opened the scoring in the second period with a three to cut the margin to eight points, 19-11, but Skaggs answered with a three to make it 22-11 at the 7:41 mark. Following a Wildcat turnover, Smith hit the fifth straight three-pointer at the 6:57 mark and the Cougars held a 14-point lead at 25-11.
A Clemons three at the 2:15 mark gave the Cougars their largest lead of the first half, 17 points at 37-20. They led by 15 at the half, 39-24.
Grayson County led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter but Edmonson (1-15; 0-4) cut it back to 18 points at the end of the period, 55-37.
Lindsey led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points, which included four three-pointers. Corey Culbreth joined him in double-figures with 10 points.
Sean Embry had six points for the Cougars off the bench, while Lance Boone had four. Jon Meredith, Tim Yochim and Adam Barton all scored two points, and Bennett Skaggs had one to complete the Cougar scoring.
The Cougars will be back in action this Friday evening as they host the Muhlenberg North Stars in a boy/girl doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
