The Leitchfield Fire Department confirmed Thursday (Jan. 5) the cause of a fire that gutted two Leitchfield businesses Dec. 29.

According to Assistant Leitchfield Fire Chief Carl “Moon” Smith, the cause of the fire was “electrical,” originating in the ceiling of Balancing Act, a local gymnastics facility owned by Leitchfield resident Stacy Hinson.

Smith said that a certified state electrical inspector examined the building on Tuesday (Jan. 3) and “determined that to be the cause.”

The Dec. 29 fire, which began just before 3 p.m., not only destroyed Balancing Act, resulting in the loss of $17,000 worth of equipment, but also gutted J.C.'s Cigarette Outlet, Movin' Movies & Tanning.

The fire also threatened AutoZone, but the store reportedly only suffered some smoke damage, employees said.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
