LEITCHFIELD - Fresh off a big win over Ohio County, the Lady Cougar eighth-graders avenged a season-opening loss by crushing the visiting Breckinridge Lady Tigers 44-28 Thursday night.
In the opening game, the seventh-grade Lady Cougars improved their record to 9-3 for the season with a 38-24 win.
Shelbi Tyra led all scorers with 18 points, 12 in the first half, and pulled down seven rebounds to spearhead the eighth-grade victory. Moriah Ashley battled foul trouble throughout the game but finished the game on the floor and had eight points.
The Lady Cougars (6-4) got off to a great start, scoring the first nine points of the game. Breck responded with five straight points to cut the lead to four with 1:41 left in the first period, but Ashley scored on a put-back basket with 1:04 left and Tyra buried a three-pointer with eight seconds left to give Grayson County a 14-5 lead as the second period got under way.
Tyra began the scoring in the second quarter with her second three-pointer and that touched off another big Grayson County run. When Tyra scored on a layup at the 1:26 mark, the Lady Cougars had reeled off 18 straight points, the last five of the first period and the first 13 of the second, and led 27-5. Grayson County led by 20 points, 29-9 at halftime.
A 10-footer by Chelsea Pharris at the 1:39 mark of the third quarter gave Grayson County its largest lead of the game, 24 points at 35-11. Breck outscored the Lady Cougars 15-9 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the big Grayson County first half.
Kalyn Whitworth led Breck County with seven points. Pharris finished with six points for Grayson County, while Sarah Taylor and Jessica Vaughan had five each. Melody Embry had two to complete the scoring.
In the seventh-grade opener, Grayson County held the Lady Tigers scoreless in the second period and led 18-4 at the half. They outscored the visitors 16-2 in the third quarter to take a 34-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Morgan Swift led balanced Lady Cougar scoring with eight points. Taylor, Paige Higdon and Kylee Gorby scored six apiece, while Pharris and Alex Crowe had four each. Ashley and Claire Crawford closed out the scoring with two each.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Greenville to take on Muhlenberg South. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
