John Yager Mercer, age 83, of Sanford, Florida, died Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at Renaissance following a lengthy illness.

He was born January 9, 1922 in Leitchfield, the son of James Jones and Emma Mae (Yager) Mercer. He served in the Army and Air Force during World War II and received several medals including a purple heart. His most noted accomplishments include supervising principal of Polk County Schools, a 43-year banking career ending most recently as Chairman of the Board of Bank First, Sanford branch. He was Past District Governor of Rotary District 6980, was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient, and achieved 50 years perfect attendance as a Rotarian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita (Church) Mercer; and his parents.

He is survived by his son, Michael (Shirley) Mercer of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Sarah Mercer Tinnon of Atlanta, Georgia and Margie (Bob) Patchett of Royal Oak, Michigan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 12, 2005 at First Baptist Church of Sanford with Pastor Joe C. Douthitt officiating.

Burial was in the Oaklawn Memorial Park, Lake Mary with full military honors.
