BROWNSVILLE - With Shelbi Tyra recording a double-double on the night, the eighth-grade girls' basketball team evened its record on the year with a 27-21, road victory over Edmonson County Monday evening.

The Lady Cougar eighth-graders came into the game with a 3-4 record after dropping a 23-20, regular-season decision last Thursday at Hancock County, then splitting two games over the weekend in a tournament at Drakes Creek. Grayson County beat Drakes Creek 28-23, but lost to Moss Middle, of Bowling Green, 43-23.

Against the Lady Wildcats (4-5) on Monday, Tyra scored nine of her game-high 11 points in the first half as the Lady Cougars raced out to a 17-8 lead. Tyra finished the night with 10 rebounds to record the double-double, and she also added a pair of blocked shots.

Edmonson County's point guard Jordan Simon, who finished with nine points, put her team in front 2-0 by hitting a 15-footer at the 3:28 mark of the opening period, but that would be the only time Edmonson County led. A 15-footer from Tyra, a 10-footer by Moriah Ashley and two Tyra free throws gave the Lady Cougars a 6-2 lead and they never gave it up. They led 8-4 after the first period ended.

The Lady Wildcats closed to within two points, 8-6 at the 3:44 mark of the second, but seven straight Lady Cougar points, the last three coming on a Tyra three-pointer with 1:02 left in the half, boosted the lead to nine points, 15-6.

Edmonson County shaved the lead to five points at the end of the third period, and trailed by just three, 24-21 with 25 seconds left in the game after Heather Vincent put in a missed shot on a rebound.

The Lady Cougars worked the clock down to 11.8 seconds before an Edmonson County foul sent Ashley to the line for bonus free throws. The Lady Cougar center missed on the front end and the ball went to Edmonson County out of bounds.

At the other end, the Lady Wildcats needed a three-pointer, but took the ball inside instead and missed a layup. Sarah Taylor rebounded the missed shot and was immediately fouled. At the other end, Taylor swished the first free throw but missed the second. However, Ashley grabbed the missed shot and put it back in as the buzzer sounded giving Grayson County the six-point win.

Ashley finished with seven points, while Taylor had five. Jessica Vaughan and Chelsea Pharris had two apiece to complete the scoring.

The Lady Cougars will be at home this Thursday as they host Breckinridge County. The seventh-grade game begins at 5 p.m., to be followed immediately by the eighth-grade game.
