FRANKFORT - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 23 people died in 21 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Oct. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 30.

Of the 21 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in seven of the crashes and 15 of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of one of the fatalities is unknown at this time.

One of the fatalities was a pedestrian.

Jefferson and Livingston counties each reported one double fatality crash. Breathitt and Jefferson counties each reported two single fatality crashes.

Single fatality crashes also occurred in Anderson, Clark, Daviess, Fayette, Hardin, Hopkins, Laurel, Lincoln, Metcalfe, Muhlenberg, Pike, Scott, Shelby, Todd and Warren counties.

Through Oct. 30, 2005, a total of 808* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways.

This is nine more than reported for this time period in 2004.

Four hundred and sixty-three of these 808 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555.

Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
