According to Grayson County Coroner Ronald Hudson, at around 1 p.m. Jesse Casteel, 28, was traveling about mile and a half out Richland Road, just off U.S. 62, when “he apparently dozed off, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree head-on.”
Hudson said the car then caught on fire after an apparent ruptured fuel line caused gasoline to spill on the engine of Casteel's car.
Casteel apparently attempted to free himself from the burning vehicle, Hudson reported, by opening the driver's side door, but was unable to get it open.
“From the looks of it,” said Hudson, “he then tried to escape out the back door, but he got wedged between the seats and just couldn't get free.”
As of press time Tuesday, Hudson said that the State Medical Examiner's office was performing an autopsy on Casteel to determine the cause of death and anything else that may have played a role in Monday's accident.
The Caneyville Fire Department and Falls of Rough Fire Department responded to the scene of Monday's accident, along with the Grayson County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Henderson is in charge of the investigation.
