Of the 23 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in four of the crashes and 11 of the victims were not wearing seat belts.
Two of the fatalities were pedestrians and three were on motorcycles and wearing helmets.
Laurel, Pulaski and Shelby counties each reported one double fatality crash. Daviess, Hardin, Pulaski and Warren counties each reported two single fatality crashes.
Single fatality crashes also occurred in Adair, Boone, Christian, Garrard, Harlan, Kenton, Laurel, Lincoln, Pike, Trigg, Woodford and Whitle counties.
Through Oct. 2, 2005, a total of 713* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is six less than reported for this time period in 2004.
Four hundred and five of these 713 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555.
Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
(*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.)
