LEITCHFIELD -- The Lady Cougar soccer teams played host to the Barren County Lady Trojans on Monday and wound up splitting a pair of games.

In the opener, eighth-grader Lauren England had four goals as Grayson County shut out the visitors 5-0. In the varsity contest, the Lady Cougars' got a goal in the opening moments from foreign-exchange student Maria Koos for an early lead, but the Lady Trojans had too many weapons to overcome as they went on to a 4-1 win over the home team.

VARSITY

Barren County dominated nearly from the outset, holding the ball in the Lady Cougars' end of the field for the majority of the game. In the first two minutes of play, the Lady Trojans put up shots from sophomore forward Lacie Adwell and senior middle forward Jordan Parsley, but neither shot found the net.

That gave the Lady Cougars the chance to get on the board first. After being awarded a corner kick, Grayson County's Felicia Tate was able to win a ball in a crowd and get it to Koos, whose shot beat the Barren goalie on the left side.

Barren got even just a few seconds later. Lady Cougar defender, junior defender Rain Sumner, made a beautiful save of a point-blank shot at an empty net, but the rebound went right to Barren County's junior forward Brittany Billingsley, who put it in past Sumner to tie things at 1-1.

The Lady Trojans kept the pressure on Grayson County, with Parsley having two-point-blank shots sail high over the cross-bar. Shortly before the end of the half, Adwell charged the Lady Cougar goal and put one past goalie Jamie Hall, who had come out trying to cut down the angle, to make it 2-1 at the intermission.

In the opening moments of the second half, Parsley finally got a ball to go in the net as a chip shot in front got over Hall's outstretched hands to make it 3-1.

The Lady Trojans continued to beat the hosts to most of the loose balls, and whenever Grayson County got free in the Barren County end, forwards Haley Hamilton and Felicia Tate often found themselves facing four and five defenders with no other help.

In the 30th minute of the second half, Adwell closed out the scoring by putting a ball past Hall after the Lady Cougar goalie had come far out of the net trying to cut off a long pass. Adwell was able to beat Hall to the ball, then put it into the empty net.

JV

This game was all Grayson County as the Lady Cougars scored twice in the first three minutes and led 4-0 at the half.

It took just 35 seconds for the Lady Cougars to get the first goal. England took a ball unchecked down the right side, maneuvered to the right side of the goal, and beat the Lady Trojan goalie to make it 1-0.

Just two minutes later, England got her second goal in similar fashion, except this time she went down the left side to make it 2-0.

The Lady Trojans controlled the action over the next few minutes before England had a shot go wide in the 15th minute and Sarah Lambert had a shot stopped in the 16th minute.

England was at it again in the 20th minute, taking the ball in the middle of the field and beating the defense with a passing shot that the Lady Trojan goalie tried to scoop up. However, England beat her to the ball, then gathered it back in just to the left of the net and punched it in for her third goal of the game. The Barren County goalie injured a hand on the play and had to be replaced for the remainder of the game.

Just before the half ended, the Cougars were on the board again, this time with a goal from Dylan Jones, another eighth-grader who shows great promise for the future,

The clock was not in operation in the second half, so it was impossible to know when events occurred, but England scored again shortly after the restart to make it 5-0. In the closing moments of the game, Brittany Allen appeared to have put in a shot after winning a ball at the left side of the Lady Trojan net, but Allen was whistled for being offside and the goal was disallowed.
