A huge national telemarketing scam is hitting close to home.

A Better Business Bureau alert says consumers are now getting phone calls from telemarketers who claim to be from Wal-Mart. The telemarketers offer $500 in shopping vouchers.

Consumers are told in order to receive the gift cards they must pay $4.99 for shipping and handling.

The caller then asks for the consumer's personal checking account number, and more than $4.99 is taken out of the consumer's account.

Wal-Mart has received thousands of calls from all over the US about this telemarketing scam.

There is a similar scam going around, using the Home Depot name.

The telemarketing calls are coming from the "Consumer Reward Network," a company that has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau in California.

To protect yourself, the BBB suggests the following:

* Don't provide your bank account or other personal information over the phone to telemarketers or anyone you don't know.

  • Beware of offers that sound too good to be true, especially if they require you to provide your bank account or credit card numbers.

  • If you give your bank account information to a suspicious caller, immediately call your bank, explain the circumstances, and tell them you want to take all of the necessary steps to block unauthorized withdrawals.

  • Always check your bank statements to make sure there are no unauthorized payments.

  • Put your telephone number on the Federal Trade Commission's Do Not Call registry by calling 1-888-382-1222.
