The state's elk herd numbers around 5,300, meaning that people drawn for a quota hunt have a good chance at success. Hunters, however, have only until July 31 to apply.
The cost to apply is $10. Interested hunters may apply anywhere hunting and fishing licenses are sold, on the Internet at fw.ky.gov or by calling 1-877-598-2401.
A hunter may only apply once for the elk quota hunts. Most equipment used for deer hunting is appropriate for elk hunting.
Kentucky residents drawn for the hunt must buy a $25 elk hunting permit and possess a valid Kentucky annual hunting license.
Out-of-state residents drawn for the hunt must purchase both a $300 non-resident elk hunting permit and a Kentucky non-resident annual hunting license.
Unlike years past, there is no limit on the number of non-residents who may be drawn for the quota elk hunts.
Hunters will be randomly selected by computer. Hunters will receive either a bull or cow elk permit, and be assigned a hunting area.
Hunting areas include limited entry (these are located within certain wildlife management areas) or zone at large (this includes Kentucky's 16-county elk restoration zone in Eastern Kentucky).
Limited entry areas are only open for elk hunting to those drawn for those hunts. The season for limited entry area hunting is October 1 - October 7 for bull elk and December 3 - 9 for cow elk.
Those drawn for the zone at large hunting may hunt with landowner permission anywhere within the elk restoration zone (except for limited entry areas).
The zone at large firearms season is the same as the season on limited entry areas for bull and cow elk. Those drawn for the zone at large may use archery or crossbow equipment from October 1, 2005 through January 16, 2006.
During the firearms elk season, all hunters within the 16-county elk restoration zone must wear unbroken hunter orange on their head, chest and back.
This includes those hunters using archery equipment for deer.
