Grayson County Coroner Ronald Hudson said Monday (June 27) that Violet Mudd, 47, of 302 East Maple Street, Caneyville, was killed attempting to stop her car when it was accidentally knocked out of gear by her two and a half year-old grandson.
According to Hudson, who conducted several interviews in trying to piece together exactly what happened, Mudd was visiting a gravesite at the Wilson Church Cemetery sometime Saturday evening between 6 and 6:30 when the accident occurred.
Hudson said that Mudd had left her grandson in the vehicle (with it still running) while she visited the gravesite.
"Somehow," Hudson said, "the boy managed to accidentally knock the car out of gear, either into neutral or reverse, causing it to roll downhill."
Hudson reported that when Mudd saw the car she ran to stop it and apparently stumbled and fell on some dirt while trying to get to the car.
As a result, Mudd became pinned under the front driver's side tire.
Hudson said that Mudd remained pinned underneath the tire until a member of the Wilson Church discovered the accident around 7:30, after apparently hearing the sound of a crying child.
According to Hudson, the child was able to open the door and get out of the car after it stopped moving.
"He was found," Hudson said, "laying on the ground next to his grandmother and was crying."
Hudson added that the child was "apparently fine" and uninjured as a result of the accident.
An autopsy was performed, Hudson said, to determine Mudd's cause of death, which he said was positional asphyxia.
