MT WASHINGTON -- The Lady Cougars continued their fine play this summer with a pair of wins at the Bullitt East Summer Shootout.
Thursday morning, the Lady Cougars manhandled a poor Southern team, 76-14. Later that afternoon, they beat a solid Louisville Holy Cross team 65-48. The Lady Cougars had split a pair of games on Wednesday, beating a good Hopkins County Central team, then falling to Louisville Moore after giving up a four-point lead in the closing seconds of the game.
SOUTHERN
Molly Beeler had 18 points, including a pair of three pointers, to spearhead a Lady Cougar attack that raced to a 13-point first quarter lead, then never looked back. Grayson County scored the first seven points of the game, then led 13-2 at the 2:45 mark of the first.
A short jumper by Tara Snyder gave the Lady Cougars a 13-point lead, 17-4 with 1:30 left before leading by 12, 19-7 at the end of the period.
After scoring the final two points of the first quarter, Grayson County scored 21 straight in the second for a 23-0 run that put them in front 40-7, and left Southern gasping for air.
Heather Baxter joined Beeler in double figures with 14 points, while Rachel Romance had nine. Tasha Farris, Shelbi Tyra and Jara Vega Velez had six apiece. Brittany Bird had five, Rebecca Meredith had four, and Laura Downs and Krista Fulkerson had three each. Snyder finished with two to complete the scoring.
HOLY CROSS
This was a much closer contest, though Grayson County led for most of the game. After Romance opened the scoring in the first period, Holy Cross got a three-point play to give them a 3-2 lead, the only time they led in the game. A Romance three-pointer put the Lady Cougars back in front and they expanded their lead to eight points, 18-10 as the quarter expired.
Romance was fouled on a rebound layup at the 1:41 mark of the second quarter and her free throw gave Grayson County its largest lead of the first half, 12 points at 31-19. But Holy Cross hit a three-pointer with 32 seconds left that cut it back to nine. Snyder then closed out the scoring by canning a 10-foot hook with 17 seconds remaining that gave the Lady Cougars a 33-22 halftime lead.
Holy Cross game out blazing in the second half, putting together a 9-0 run that made it 33-31 at the 5:42 mark. Following a Grayson County turnover, Holy Cross had the chance to tie it, but the Lady Cougar defense forced a five-second call and that seemed to wake them up.
Farris buried a three-pointer to start the Lady Cougars on a 15-5 run that saw them take a 12-point lead, 48-36, into the fourth quarter.
The game was pretty much over after Grayson County scored the first six points of the final period to go up by 18 points, 54-36. A Bird layup at the 1:44 mark gave them the largest lead of the game, 63-42, but Holy Cross hit a pair of three pointers in the last 1:23 before Tyra closed out the scoring with a 15-footer to make the final margin 17 points.
Romance and Bird shared high-point honors with 18 apiece. Downs hit a pair of threes and finished with eight points, while Farris had seven. Vega Velez, Beeler and Tyra all had four points, while Snyder finished with two to round out the Lady Cougar scoring.
