The Leitchfield Police Department has made two arrests in connection with several thefts from vehicles, two stolen vehicles and damage to property.

According to Detective Gary Troutman, Gerald W. Jones, Jr., 25, of Leitchfield, and Everett C. Whobrey, 18, also of Leitchfield, were arrested on Saturday (May 28) and both were charged with three counts of theft by unlawful taking (over $300), one count of arson in the third degree and one count of theft by unlawful taking (under $300).

Jones was also charged with possession of burglary tools.

Troutman said that the thefts occurred around Green's Implement, NAPA Auto Parts and Po' Boy Produce and the arson took place on Saturday night, when Jones and Whobrey allegedly set fire to a portable toilet at the Bratcher Flea Market.

Troutman said that the two men were arrested by Detective Todd Cave late Saturday night and both are currently lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

"Cave has reported he has recovered some of the items from the thefts," Troutman said.

In other police business, Detective Todd Cave reported that John Bradley Keith Sweeris, 18, of Leitchfield, was arrested on May 18 and charged with three counts of sexual abuse in the second degree and three counts unlawful transaction with a minor.

Cave said Thursday (June 2) that the charges against Sweeris stem from complaints made against him.

The alleged sex abuse was reported on May 9, Cave said, and took place at a Leitchfield apartment complex.

Due to the serious nature of the criminal allegations, and to protect all those involved, Cave was reluctant to release the name of the apartments.

Sweeris is also currently lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
