LEITCHFIELD -- After an uninspired first half, the Lady Cougar varsity turned it on in the second half to run away from the visiting Whitesville Trinity Lady Raiders 69-46 Monday night.

After their emotional win on Saturday in Owensboro, the Lady Cougars (13-5) came out flat in the first half against Trinity (6-12). Though they got good shots time after time down the floor, Grayson County could just not get anything to fall with any consistency.

The Lady Cougars scored the first four points of the game, but Trinity answered with seven unanswered points to take the lead. Grayson County came back to regain the lead, 12-11 on a Tasha Farris lay-up with 53 seconds left in the first period and they took that lead into the second quarter.

The Lady Cougars went in front by five, 16-11 at the 6:57 mark of the second period, but Trinity put together an 11-2 run that gave them a 22-18 lead with 3:29 left in the half. Grayson County pulled to within a point of the lead with 2:19 left, but the Lady Raiders maintained a four-point lead at the half, 27-23.

Everything changed, though, in the second half as the shots that were missing in the first half started falling. Brittany Bird started things off on the right foot by hitting a three-pointer to open the second-half scoring. Lee Ann Wood followed with a second-chance basket to give the Lady Cougars a lead they would not give up the rest of the way.

Those baskets keyed a 9-0 run that put Grayson County up by five, 32-27 at the 5:38 mark. The Lady Cougars expanded their lead to as many as 16 points, 46-30 at the 2:45 mark, before taking a 15-point, 49-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Teamwork was the key ingredient in the second half. At the half, the Lady Cougars had four assists, but in the second half they combined for 11 for a total of 15 for the game. Seven different players recorded assists in the game, led by Molly Beeler who had five, and Bird and Rachel Romance who had three apiece.

Three Lady Cougars reached double figures in scoring, led by Romance with 16. The junior forward hit three three-pointers on the night. Wood finished her night's work with 13 points, while Bird closed out the game with 12.

Cindy Langley provided tough defense and rebounding to go along with her nine points. Tasha Farris continued to prove her value off the bench with solid floor work and eight points. Beeler had six points and Laura Downs tossed in five in a reserve role to complete the scoring.

In JV action, the Lady Cougars dropped a close one Saturday at Owensboro, 39-36, but came back Monday to defeat the Lady Raiders 55-36.

At Owensboro, the Lady Cougars trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, but came back in the third period, tying the game at 26-26 with 12 seconds left in the quarter. Tasha Farris then beat the buzzer with a 10-footer that gave Grayson County its first lead of the day to start the fourth quarter.

Grayson County fell behind by six points in the fourth quarter, but tied things against at 36-36 with 1:27 left. That would be all they would get though as the Lady Devils scored the final three points to take the game. Farris led all scorers with 14 points.

Against Whitesville, Grayson County raced out to an 18-5 first period lead and was never in trouble the rest of the way. Nine players breached the scoring column, led by Farris with 12, and Rebecca Meredith with nine.

Grayson County will have a big test this Friday when they travel to Hartford for a boy/girl doubleheader against district rival Ohio County. The Lady Cougars will be looking to avenge an earlier 70-51 loss to the Lady Eagles. JV action begins at 4 p.m. with varsity games to follow.
