GCMS boys drop McLean County

LEITCHFIELD -- The eighth-grade Cougars took control in the second quarter of their game with McLean County Thursday night, then held on to secure a 38-26 win to move to 25-2 for the season.

In the opener, the seventh-grade Cougars got 13 points from Dustin Thomas and won going away 45-30.

McLean County (8-14) scored the first four points of the game, but the Cougars fought back with five straight to take their first lead on an Aaron Deviney lay-up at the 2:29 mark of the first period.

McLean scored on a couple of free throws with 1:44 left, but Wes Smith scored on a back-door play with 10 seconds left in the period to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead heading into the second period.

Grayson County took a five-point lead a little over a minute into the second period, but McLean closed back to within three points, 16-13 with 1:56 remaining.

But the Cougars closed out the half with six unanswered points to lead by nine, 22-13 at the half.

Grayson County led by as many as 13 points in the third period, but ended up the third quarter with an 11-point lead, 30-19.

Grayson County then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers by Chris McCoy and Tyler Saltsman, to build an insurmountable 19-point lead.

McCoy and Deviney each scored 12 points in the game to lead all scorers. McLean's Kody Render led his team with 10 points.

Travis Johnston had seven for the Cougars and Saltsman finished with three.

Smith and Bennett Skaggs each had two to complete the scoring.
