WHITESVILLE -- The Cougars won their fifth straight and the seventh in their last eight games Tuesday night as they trounced Whitesville Trinity 73-31 on the Raiders' home floor.
Grayson County (9-8) never trailed in the game as all 14 players saw significant playing time in the blowout win. Eleven players made it into the scoring column, led by sophomore Josh Smith, who hit four three-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points against the Raiders (1-14).
The gym in Whitesville has been a difficult place for visiting teams, particularly Grayson County, in the past, but the Cougars outscored the Raiders 20-4 in the first period and the game was never close afterward.
The Cougars got baskets from Chris Elmore and Bryce Meredith to open the scoring before the Raiders' Chase Boarman scored to make it 4-2 at the 6:11 mark. That would turn out to be the closest the Raiders would get to the lead as Grayson County answered with 14 unanswered points to go up 18-2 with 1:31 left in the first period. Travis Lacefield and Graham Huffman had three-pointers during the run.
Smith had three of his three-pointers in the second period and Grayson County extended its lead to 18 points, 34-16 at the halftime intermission.
The Cougars defense was even tougher in the second half, holding the Raiders to just six points in the third period and nine in the fourth.
Three players scored eight points for the Cougars, seniors, Elmore, Meredith and Casey Johnston. Huffman and sophomore Lance Boone had seven points apiece, while Lacefield finished with six. Junior Chase Richardson had five points, while Jordan Drake had four. Juniors Lincoln Skaggs and Jon Meredith both had three points to complete the Cougars scoring.
The Cougars will be out of action until Friday, January 28, when they will travel to Greenville for a boy/girl doubleheader against the Muhlenberg North Stars.
