BROWNSVILLE -- With their trapping, full-court defense cranked up to high gear, the Lady Cougars beat Edmonson County 47-29 last Tuesday night.

The Lady Cougars (4-2) forced 15 first-half turnovers and held Edmonson County (0-4) to just 10 points as they grabbed a 22-10 halftime lead. Many times, the Lady Wildcats never got past half court before they were stripped of the ball and had to watch as the Lady Cougars went in the other direction.

A two-minute stretch in the second period was typical of the kind of night the Lady Wildcats had against Grayson County.

With the Lady Cougars clinging to a one-point lead, 11-10, a steal by Molly Beeler led to two free throws from Laura Downs at the 4:54 mark. Two more Edmonson turnovers, a 10-second violation and a Cindy Langley steal, failed to produce points, but another turnover led to a Langley rebound lay-up at the 4:10 mark that made it 15-10.

Brittany Bird threw in a three-pointer at the 3:03 mark to make it 18-10, before Lee Ann Wood stole the ball on the inbounds play and got it immediately to Langley for another lay-in at the 2:49 mark to put the Lady Cougars up by 10.

Beeler got hot in the third quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 16 points as the Lady Cougars turned a 12-point halftime lead into a 17-point, 35-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The teams played evenly in the final period, when Wood had six of her 11 points. Edmonson County's Donnetta Meredith led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 12 points before she fouled out with 2:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Bird hit two long balls on the night to finish with eight points. Langley, Downs and Rachel Romance had four points apiece to complete the Grayson County scoring.

The Lady Cougars will be on the road Monday when they travel to Owensboro to take on the Lady Aces of Owensboro Catholic. This will be their final game until after the holiday break. JV action will start at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
