Health Department director Sue Vincent said Friday ( Dec. 17) that unless something changes "we really don't expect to get any more flu shots."
She also reported that the health department has around 140 flu shots left and that people are calling frequently and making appointments to receive one of the last remaining flu shots that will be available this flu season to residents in Grayson County.
When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first reported the flu vaccine shortage back in October, which they called "one of the worst we've seen in 10 years," they issued a set of criteria for receiving a flu shot this year.
Those criteria included:
These were the "priority groups" for reception of the flu vaccine and most health departments throughout the state have strictly followed this set of criteria.
Vincent did say on Friday however that there has been one change in terms of who can receive the vaccine.
"Now, healthy people ages 50 to 64 can also receive a flu shot," Vincent said.
This is the only change that Vincent is currently aware of when it comes to the distribution of the remaining flu vaccine.
For those who qualify for a flu shot, the cost is $15, unless they have medicare or medicaid, which will cover the cost of the shot.
